Your Task:

·   Write a well-organized essay that persuades the reader that the Constitution was a better form of government than the Articles of Confederation. 

·   You need to explain your reasons using documentation and your knowledge of Social Studies.

 

Helpful Guidelines:

·   Introduction: Begin by briefly stating how the Articles of Confederation failed the United States and how the new Constitution helped make the United States better.  You may utilize the Historical Setting.  

·   BP1: Explain the failures of the Articles of Confederation and the abilities of the Constitution (compare and contrast). 

·   BP2: Further explain the Constitution’s Three Branches and their powers.  You need to defend the need for each separate branch. 

·   BP3: Now, explain the system of Checks and Balances and why you feel it is needed.

·   Conclusion: Summarize the body paragraphs and make a final attempt to persuade your point of view.

The final draft of the DBQ essay, which we have been writing together in class, will be due within the days of Friday, May 6, Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 10 (the latest). 

 

Please type it in Arial or Times New Roman, size 12.  Please use black, dark blue, or dark green ink.  You may double-space it and print it back-to-back.  If you cannot type it, please make sure that it is neatly handwritten.   

 

Remember the following tips. 

  • Introduction Paragraph – Use the Historical Context to help you summarize what you will be writing about in the essay.
  • Body Paragraphs 1 and 2 – Describe many ways in which slaves were denied their basic human rights.
  • Body Paragraph 3 – Explain why slaveholders denied the slaves their basic human rights.
  • Conclusion Paragraph – Summarize your essay and rephrase the introduction if you need to. 
  • In the body paragraphs, be sure to use about 6 documents and 2 pieces of outside information…and label them!
