Mr. Murphy's WebsitePhysical education is a comprehensive developmental program focused on the education of the whole person. As a result of continued participation in a directed physical activity sequence throughout the High School, basic skills are incorporated into a variety of complex experiences including game, sport, fitness, and risk challenging and leisure activities. Physical education applies the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to establish and sustain a lifelong pattern of regular activity, which leads to a healthy, productive and self-fulfilling life. The learning environment provides continued opportunities for personal and group challenges. Cooperative behavior and respect for individual differences are essential for completion of group tasks. The students will recognize the similarities and differences between cooperative and competitive behaviors. Develops cardio (heart) - vascular (blood vessels) - respiratory (lungs) Develops strong muscles Contributes to the overall physical and emotional health of a student Promotes socially acceptable behavior, cooperation and teamwork Develops skills which enhance agility, balance, reaction time and speed Teaches how to use your body effectively and become physically fit for life -Healthy children become healthy adults! Just as we are taught to speak, walk and write, we need to be taught how to use our bodies effectively and become physically fit for life. Physical Education helps children develop fitness, become independent learners and develop social skills by interacting with other students. Physical Education is an area of education that focuses on educating the whole child. Regular physical activity is any activity which: takes at least 20 minutes and occurs at least 3 times per week and makes the heart operate at at least 60% of its cardiovascular capacity. We should be physically active for several reasons: First.... because it is good for your health. Vigorous exercise can reduce the incidence of: obesity, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and anxiety. Second.... because it is good for your heart. Physical activity counteracts some of the major factors of coronary heart disease: hypertension, obesity, inactivity and high cholesterol. Third.... because it will make you happier. Studies have shown that more physically fit people are happier. Fourth.... because it will make you more productive.
