Dear
Parents:
Attached
you will find the 2009/2010 Spring Term Calendar. We are still trying to determine the date of our Graduation
Ceremony. We are awaiting
confirmation from Fashion High School, who has always been very accommodating
to our school.
I
just want to remind parents that they need to discuss with their children the
importance of taking care of some of the items they bring to school. Cell Phones are not permitted in
New York City Public Schools. If they are seen or ring in school,
they will be confiscated and parents must come to school to retrieve them. Within the last few months, many
students have begun to wear Rosary Beads that have become a sign of gang
activity. Various colored beads,
flags, bandanas and scarves with certain symbols are also gang related paraphernalia. These items are not to be brought or
worn to school. Students who are found
with such items have been told these items will be confiscated and parents must
retrieve them from school.
Within
the last couple of weeks, we have been noticing certain groups congregating in
the yard adjacent to our school.
This is causing various problems for our students and for other students
who are utilizing this public park area.
In recent weeks, local gangs have begun to congregate and to fight in
our yard. We have notified School
Safety and the 90 Precinct and we will be attending the 90 Precinct Community Meeting
in Lindsay Park Community Room on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 7:30 pm,
which is located at 30 Montrose Avenue.
Prior to school and after school, we have teachers, School Security,
Assistant Principals and myself patrolling the blocks adjacent to our
school. At this time, we feel that
a police presence would deter these individuals from congregating near the
school. Some of our students have
also been seen associating with these individuals. We have impressed upon our students the need to avoid
associating with these groups. I
have also contacted parents of students who have been identified as associating
with these groups. It is
imperative that all of our children are aware of the dangers that can occur if
they continue to associate with undesirable groups or potential gang members.
Students
should not congregate in the park after school hours. Each day, we are doing everything possible to ensure that
our students have a safe admission and dismissal from the building.
With
your cooperation and the cooperation of our students, I am sure we will
continue to keep IS 318 as a safe environment where students continue to learn
and grow.
As
always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Fortunato
