Dear Parents,
In the last four years we have endured cuts to our budget
that have had a direct effect on the programs that we offer before, during and
after school. Within the last 2 years,
we have been cut 4.9 and 5.9 respectively.
We have addressed these cuts by reducing and cutting after-school and
Saturday programs, raising class size, reducing and/or eliminating our
mathematics and ELA split classes and reducing the funding to successful
programs like Robotics and Future Cities, Marching Band and Chess. These are the programs that set our school
apart from other schools and are specifically designed to challenge and
motivate our children while exposing them to new and creative ideas, talents
and concepts. We are, again, expecting a
budget cut in excess of 5%. This cut
will further reduce the amount of funding that we can allocate to our special
programs. Most likely, many of the
programs that have been reduced will now have to be eliminated.
We have a school-wide candy sale and many of our teams
sell candy to purchase their uniforms, referee fees and traveling fees. In order to raise the amount of money needed
to supplement our school allocation we have decided to do an I.S. 318 Walk-A-Thon. We are hoping to get a donation from each
family and for the students to get sponsors for their participation in this
event. The Walk-A-Thon with take place at
I.S. 318 on Wednesday, June 2nd.
Students will participate throughout the day as a grade. They will do their walking around the block
of our school. We will also have
activities such as basketball, hockey, football and softball for them in the
school yard adjacent to our school. We
are anticipating a hot day so we will have water and refreshments for our
students as they participate. This
should be an excellent way for our students to show school spirit and to help
save some of the programs that they really enjoy.
I must thank you for all the cooperation you have given
over the years. We have one of the best
parent groups when it comes to school spirit.
Throughout the year, I have always tried to keep you informed about
issues and concerns that have an impact on the children who attend our
school. I appreciate the positive
responses that you have given to these alerts and issues throughout the year.
In about a week your child will receive the form for the Walk-A-Thon. The sheet will have a family sponsoring
section and a section for other sponsors.
It is easier to get a flat rate
from the sponsor than to get a rate per
mile. Students and sponsors will be
receiving certificates and thank you letters for their sponsors. We are hoping for a very successful event on
June 2nd. If you have any
questions please feel free to call.
Sincerely,
Fortuanto V. Rubino
